Sri Lankan International Airport Ready for Flights

Sri Lanka's only international airport which came under heavy Tamil Tiger rebel attack on Tuesday will be ready for flights from Wednesday.

Civil Aviation sources said the first inbound flight of Emirates Airlines is expected at Bandaranaike International Airport, some 30 kilometers northeast of capital Colombo on Wednesday morning.

Aviation authorities said that international requirements had been fully ensured and passenger safety was guaranteed.

The airport which came under military supervision immediately after the attack was handed over to the airport authorities at mid- day Tuesday.

The national carrier Srilankan Airlines which lost five airbuses in the attack announced that it was working out operational plans based on available aircraft. It has six aircraft out of the country and outgoing flights would commence only after their return.

Non-resident passengers affected by cancellations and diversions would be accommodated by the airline in hotels and would be booked on first available flights.

Qatar Airways will increase its flights to and from Colombo to ease problems arising from the rebel attack on the airport, officials said.
