China Launches Sci-tech Plan for 2008 Olympics
An action plan aiming to make the 2008 Summer Olympic Games into a high technology-supported sports event has been jointly launched by the Chinese government and major scientific and research institutions.
The plan will employ top Chinese scientists and the latest research results to provide technology and intelligence support to the 2008 Olympics, said Xu Guanhua, Minister of Science and Technology.
Leading research institutions will make concerted efforts to provide key technology to upgrade Beijing's environment, traffic, and sports research, Xu, who also leads a working group for the plan, said at a meeting to launch the action Friday in Beijing.
Advanced technology will be used in environmental issues such as sandstorms control, pollution and popularization of clean energy. Overall development and application of an intelligent traffic control system will ensure a fast and convenient flow of traffic in Beijing.
Researchers will also focus on the development of a digital information system, intelligent management system for sports events and an information safety network. Medical and health services, sports training equipment and anti-doping tests will also benefit from the intensive research, Xu said.
The action plan was initiated by the ministries of Science and Technology, and Education, the Beijing Municipal government, the Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense, and the State General Administration of Sport.
Major scientific institutions involved in the plan include the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and the China Association for Science and Technology.
"We hope the 2008 Olympics will become a stage to demonstrate the high technology and innovation abilities of China," said Xu.
