Luo Wins Second Gold Medal at World Swimming Championships

Luo Wins Second Gold Medal at World Swimming Championships
Luo Xuejuan of China won her second world title when she took the women's 50 meters breaststroke swimming gold in a time of 30.84 seconds at the 9th FINA world swimming championships Friday in Fukuoka.

Luo's time was only one hundredth of a second shy of the world record set by South Africa's Penelope Heyns in August of 1999.

The 17-year-old from east China's Zhejiang Province had won the earlier 100m breaststroke event, which was also China's first swimming title in Fukuoka.

American Kristy Kowal finished second in 31.37 and Briton Zoe Baker was third in 31.40, on Friday.

"It's great to win the gold, but I still felt disappointed as I 'd expected to break the world record," she said after the victory. "I did not feel any pressure and I'm fully confident in myself. That's why I look more mature than my age."

"I'd like to thank my coach for helping me win two golds at the world championships."

Saying that she would now focus on preparations for the coming national games slated for this November in Guangzhou, south China, a smiling Luo said: "I like Japan and I'm happy to compete here and would like to be back here again," she added.
