Top Chinese Athletes to Participate in Universiade

As many as 9 Chinese Olympic gold medalists will take part in the 21st World University Games to be held in Beijing from August 22 to September 1.

The nine Olympic champions are divers Tian Liang and Hu Jia, race walker Wang Liping, judoka Yuan Hua, paddler Wang Liqin and gymnasts Li Xiaopeng, Yang Wei, Xing Aowei and Zheng Lihui. China won 28 gold medals at the Sydney Olympic Games.

Among the 390-member Chinese delegation to the Univresiade, 52 took part in the Sydney Olympic Games, including famous cagers Wang Zhizhi, Yao Ming and Bateer.

The Chinese delegation, consists of 130 male and 135 female athletes, will take part in all the 12 sports at the Universiade.

The 21st World University Games will see a record entry of some 7,000 athletes and officials from 165 countries and regions. The 12 sports featured at the games are swimming, diving, athletics, gymnastics, table tennis, tennis, fencing, judo, volleyball, basketball, soccer and water polo.
