China Pacific Provides Insurance for 21st World University Games

The China Pacific Insurance Company Ltd. will provide insurance totaling 15.4 billion yuan ( about 1.86 billion US dollars) for the forthcoming 21st World University Games, sources from the company said in Shanghai on August 9.

The insurance, ranging from accident and medical insurance to property and third-party liability insurance, will cover some 180, 000 athletes, coaches, referees, officials, journalists, medical workers, volunteers and spectators from many different countries.

The 21st World University Games, scheduled to open in Beijing on August 22, are the first world-class comprehensive sports games hosted by China. The University Games are regarded as a dry run for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

Huo Lianhong, general manager of China Pacific, described sports insurance as a "new growth factor" in China's insurance industry, backed by the rapid development of the country's sports and the enhanced exchanges and cooperation with international sports circles.
