Beijing Hosts Sino-US Comparative Literature Forum

The Third Sino-American Forum on Comparative Literature opened in Beijing Saturday at Qinghua University, with the co-sponsorship of Yale University in the United States.

The theme of the four-day forum is "The Globalization of Comparative Literature: Towards the New Millennium." Over 80 experts and scholars will discuss the history of comparative literature and comparative research of literary theories in China and Western countries, and the conflicts between and integration of comparative literature and cultural research.

This forum is a high-level dialogue between Chinese and American scholars on comparative literature. The first and second forums were held in 1983 and 1987, respectively.

Professor Wang Dazhong, president of Qinghua University, said at the opening ceremony that Qinghua will make great efforts to strengthen its human sciences faculty, in a bid to build Qinghua into one of the world's top-ranking universities in ten years.

The fourth forum will be held in 2004 in the United States.
