Program on Work for Elderly to Be Published

The State Council has issued a circular saying it will print and distribute its plan to aid work programs for the elderly.

In its "Program on the Development of the Work Involving the Aged People in China in the 10th Five-Year Plan Period (2001-2005), " the State Council calls on all localities, ministries and institutions of the State Council to act strictly in accordance with the program in doing their work with the aged.

The program clearly outlines the measures China will take to develop the work in five categories: financial support; medical treatment and health care; community service; cultural life; and guarantee of the rights and interests of the elderly.

The program points out that the work will be done in comprehensive way in the 2001-2005 period, and that this should allow the elderly people to be taken good care of, enjoy medical services, entertain themselves by doing what they love to do and make contributions to society.

Old-age pension systems specifically catering to urban and rural residents, and an elderly people's management and service system will be established in the five-year period.
