Guangzhou Improves Environment Quality

Guangzhou, capital of south China's Guangdong Province has achieved great success in improving its environment quality, sources with local government said.

In 2000, Guangzhou, once labeled a seriously polluted city, ranked seventh in terms of the overall environment quality among the country's 35 key monitored cities, much better than its position of 28th a year ago.

Serious pollution in the Pearl River lessened and swarms of fish re-emerged there. Reports said that in dry seasons this year, the solubility of oxygen of the river was 2.8 mg per liter, an increase of 1.2 mg per liter from the same period of 2000.

The air quality was much better in 2000, with the major index up 17.3 percentage points from 1999.

The noise level was down 0.5 decibel from 1999 to reach an average 54.2 decibels.
