China-UK Program on Community Health Service Launched

A joint Sino-British program was launched Wednesday in Beijing, with the aim to improve China's urban community health service and aid urban poverty-stricken people.

The British government will donate 7.1 million pounds for the four-year program, the largest international free-aid program in China's urban health service sector so far, Vice Minister of Health Peng Yu said.

Shenyang, Chengdu and another western China city will be chosen as the trial cities to carry out the program, whose overall goal is to improve urban poverty-stricken people's health conditions, strengthen the community health service capability, and establish a sustainable community health service model.

A nationwide survey shows that compared with 1993, more urban patients in China were unable to stay in hospitals in 1998 due to economic difficulties.

To improve health service, the Chinese government is carrying out reforms, including the implementation of a basic medical insurance system, to provide convenient and low-cost service to urban residents in the country.

Up to June this year, 27 out of the 30 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions in the Chinese mainland had drawn out their basic policies on developing community health services.
