Job Market Becoming More Competitive in China

The labor market in China is getting increasingly competitive, with more job hunters than vacancies, sources with the Ministry of Labor and Social Security said Thursday.

The Ministry conducted two surveys in the second quarter of this year. The first, carried out in 62 major job markets, shows that the number of job searchers registered at local employment offices stood at 2.22 million, while only 1.54 million jobs were available.

"This gap indicates that many will be left jobless," an official with the Ministry said.

Another survey reveals that the number of jobless is increasing while re-employment opportunities remain hard to get.

The second survey was done in 10 Chinese cities, including Shenyang in northeast China, where unemployment is serious.

It revealed that young people below the age of 35 accounted for over 50 percent of the unemployed. Among the jobless, 30 percent said that they had never had a job, while 10 percent said that they were not willing to work at the present time.

Among the unemployed, 70 percent said they had been to the job training centers, and the majority of them thought the experience was useful.

Most of the unemployed said they are seriously concerned about whether they can get unemployment benefits from the government, or whether they can find a job immediately.

Based on the results of the surveys, the Ministry is working on measures to solve such problems as unemployment benefits, other social security plans for the jobless, and retraining programs.
