China Starts to Train Bio-informatic Professionals for Genomics Research

China set up its first two centers Saturday to provide training in the knowledge and skills for deciphering the secrets of life at Zhejiang University and a training center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in Beijing.

The move represents the birth of a new discipline in China, called genomic bio-formatics, focusing on genome research with the help of biology and informatics.

A group of graduate students specializing in genomic bio- formatics at Zhejiang University began their first day of the new semester as the country's first students specializing in the new discipline.

A spokesman for the university and CAS said that Eric Lander, a leading figure in the international Human Genome Project and a biology professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology ( MIT) in the United States, has been appointed honorary president of the two training centers.

The new discipline will help mankind decipher the genetic code of all living things, including man himself.
