Somkiat Phonprayoon was appointed by the United Nations as the commander of a multinational force patrolling the Iraqi-Kuwaiti border, according to the Nation Newspaper Saturday.

Somkiat, a Thai naval officer, will take command of the joint patrol force of soldiers from 32 countries for one year beginning November 24.

Meanwhile, 15 other Thai officers will also join the force and another five Thai officers will join a U.N. observation mission in Sierra Leone.

The responsibility of the patrol force is to observe enforcement of a non-aggression agreement, the paper reported.
