Typhoon Nari Reportedly Kills 21 in TaiwanHeavy rains brought by Typhoon Nari overnight have caused 21 dead, 68 injured, and nine missing, according to reports reaching Hong Kong from Taipei.The report quoted a disaster relief center as saying that Typhoon Nari has brought the heaviest rains to Taipei in the last two decades. Six water pumping stations around Taiwan broke down as surging waters far exceeded their capacity, according to the report. Some 25 hilly areas around Taipei, mostly in and around Yangmingshan, experienced cave-ins as a result of the pounding rains, with some showing signs of mudslides. Taiwan Power Co. reported that the telephones of more than 1.21 million households were out of order as of Monday morning. The center of the typhoon is expected to move off the island after Monday night at the latest, and Taiwan will be out of the typhoon's influence only after noon Tuesday, according to the report. |
