Xinjiang's Export Drops

The export value of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region dropped 45 percent to US$455 million in the first eight months of this year, a regional trade official said in Urumqi recently.

He attributed the trade decline to rectification of border trade and stricter control of foreign exchanges.

In August, the region recorded a one-third reduction in the total foreign trade volume compared with last year's same period, the lowest point since 1997.

The small-amount border export came to US$148 million, a drop of US$185 million, or 60 percent.

A decline reported in major export items with textiles down by 35 percent, shoes and garment down by 70 percent, and cotton down by 80 percent.

Nevertheless, the import of Xinjiang rose 26 percent to reach US$96 million.
