Plane Carrying Arms Detained at Tanzanian Airport

An international arms-carrying plane has been detained by Tanzanian authorities when it made a stopover at an airport in the western Mwanza region, the independent Guardian newspaper reported on Wednesday.

Security organs in Mwanza detained on Tuesday morning at Mwanza Airport the cargo plane which was said to be flying from Israel to Angola.

The Antonov 12 plane of the Ukraine Cargo Airways with a carrying capacity of 35 tons had six crewmembers who were being held by security officers at a hotel for questioning.

It was not immediately established why the plane landed at the airport. Soon after its landing at around 9 a.m., security and immigration officers inspected the plane and found the consignment of arms, said the report.

Mwanza Airport, which is located by Lake Victoria, is one of the major airports in Tanzania. Cargo planes hosted by the airport are mainly used by companies to carry various mineral products for export as well as to transport fish fillet to Europe.

The Mwanza Regional Police Commander Eliah Kihengu declined to make any comment on the issue.
