HK Voices Support of Anti-terrorism Efforts

Hong Kong Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa on Monday expressed the support to international efforts to combat terrorism.

"Acts of terrorism are totally unacceptable, and we support international efforts to combat terrorism. In Hong Kong, we are acting in accordance with the Central Government's directive to enact the latest United Nations resolutions," Tung told media at the Central Government Offices.

"Obviously, we are watching very closely the development in Afghanistan. Earlier on this morning I had a meeting with the Chief Secretary, Financial Secretary and the Secretary of Justice to review the situation," he said.

"We are also liaising with the United States and other international organizations closely in the fight against acts of terrorism," he continued.

Tung stressed that Hong Kong is stable and safe, and the Hong Kong Police is fully capable of keeping Hong Kong's stability.

No Cause For Undue Concerns Over Terrorist Threats: HK Police

The Hong Kong police has put in place contingency plans to ensure public safety and to cope with different kinds of emergencies, so there is no cause for undue concerns over terrorist threats in Hong Kong, a police officer said Monday.

"The contingency plans will be revised in the light of changes in circumstances," said Lau Yuk-kuen, Hong Kong's deputy commissioner of police, when asked about the security of Hong Kong following the U.S. and the British military action against terrorism.

Lau reiterated that so far the police have no information or intelligence to indicate that Hong Kong may become a target of terrorist attacks.

"The whole force has been placed on alert," Lau said. Emergency response units of the police, such as Special Duty Unit, Police Tactical Unit, Emergency Unit and Explosive Ordnance Disposal Bureau are on a high state of readiness, he said.

Noting that protection measures are also in place to ensure the safety of premises, installations and personalities considered potential targets for terrorist attacks, Lau said the police had established a notification system with relevant government departments, diplomatic missions, organizations and public utilities for immediate access to police assistance and response.

Police are also maintaining close liaison with local and overseas law enforcement intelligence agencies in order to keep watch over developments and continuously assess the threat levels, Lau said.

"Our city remains safe and stable. Police are well trained and equipped to deal with all emergencies," he added.
