Thousands Rally in Paris to Condemn Terrorism and War

Thousands of people Thursday afternoon gathered in downtown Paris to condemn the September 11 terrorist attacks on the United States and the US-led war of riposte that killed innocent people.

The demonstrators, called by several labor unions, political parties and human rights associations, started marching through the boulevard Voltaire to the Place Nation in downtown Paris at 1800 local time (1600 GMT).

They branded slogans reading "no to imperialist war", "America killer, Europe accomplice" and "suppress fiscal havens", etc.

"The bombings against the Afghan people who are innocent and already persecuted by the Taliban are as ignoble as the terrorist attacks on the U.S," said Arlette Laguiller, spokeswoman of Worker 's Fight, a left-wing association.

Also on Thursday afternoon, about 300 demonstrators gathered in the southern French city of Marseilles to call for peace. They shouted "no to imperialism" and "no to war" in front of the Prefecture of Marseilles, reported French television France 2.
