China's Consumer Confidence Remains High

Chinese consumers remained confident in the country's economy with the consumer confidence index at the high level of 97.3 points in September, according to the National Bureau of Statistics Monday.

The NBS report said that the consumer confidence index only fell by 0.2 points from August to September even though the Chinese economy is affected by the world economic slowdown.

The report attributed the strong consumer confidence to the country's stable economic growth and to income increases. The consumer expectations index reached 97.8 points last month.

According to the report, more than half of consumers surveyed are relatively optimistic about the Chinese economy's prospects in the next 12 months though 78 percent thought the domestic economy is faced with a tough global situation.

The consumer contentment index also dropped slightly from 96.7 points in August to 96.4 last month. However 62 percent of those surveyed considered the overall economy "satisfactory" or " relatively content".

The NBS report predicted that China's consumer confidence index will be unchanged for some time, while it awaits new stimulation.
