Japan's Population at 126.92 Million in 2000: Census

Japan's population stood at 126,925,843 on Oct. 1 last year. The figure is based on the revised final figures the Ministry of Public Management, Home Affairs, Posts and Telecommunications released Wednesday for the 2000 national census.

The female population outstripped the male population by 64,815,079 to 62,110,764.

Compared with the previous census taken in 1995, Japan's population rose by 1,355,597, or a mere 1.1%. The growth rate was below the previous figure which marked a post-war record low.

The economically active population -- aged between 15 and 64 -- fell by 1.1% from the previous census to 86.22 million, the first time a decrease was marked since the national census began in 1920.

In contrast, the population of people aged over 65 rose 20.5% to 22.01 million, or 17.3% of the total population, whereas the population of children under 15 totaled 18.47 million. This is the first time the over-65 population has eclipsed the under-15 population in Japan.

While the elderly population expanded in all 47 prefectures, the population of children under 15 have eclipsed the over-65 population in all but six prefectures.

The number of households in Japan rose 6.6% to 46.78 million. Among them, 3.03 million were headed by singles aged over 65, a 37.7% increase from the previous census.

Elderly, single women numbered 2.29 million, 3.1-fold the equivalent figure for men.

Households comprising only elderly couples -- husbands over 65 and wives over 60 -- rose 32.5% to 3.66 million.
