China to Host Intl. Youth Musical Contest

China will host a major international competition for young musicians playing the work of Tchaikovsky in October 2002 in Xiamen, coastal city of Fujian Province.

A local cultural official said here Wednesday that the contest participants will play works of the legendary composer on three western musical instruments: piano, violin and cello.

Young people born after October 18, 1985, are eligible to participate in the event, which is part of the International Tchaikovsky Musical Contest, one of the world's top four music competitions.

Through the contest, jointly sponsored by the city government of Xiamen and a Russia-based musical contest association, more and more musically gifted young people will be discovered and further trained, the official said.

The first contest of its kind was hosted in 1991 in Moscow. The second and third were held respectively in Sendai, Japan, and St. Petersburg in Russia.
