In women's
doubles, Ge Gei and long-time partner Gu Jun enter the Sydney 2000
Olympic Games as defending champions. In mixed doubles, she and
partner Liu Yong were the 1997 world champions. Ge and Gu have dominated
women's doubles thoroughly since taking off in 1996 with titles
in three tournaments en route to the Atlanta Olympic Games. There,
they blew away South Korea's Gil Young Ah and Jang Hye Ock, 15-5,
15-5. They have shown no sign of easing up. After Atlanta, Ge and
Gu won the World Grand Prix final and the World Cup. In 1997, they
swept through the World Championships, another All-England Open,
the Korea, Japan, Swiss, Malaysian and China Opens and the Singapore
Cup, World Cup, World Grand Prix and Sudirman Cup. In 1998, they
won another string, including the Asian Championships, and, in 1999,
they added their second World Championship crown. In 2000, they
have won another All-England Open title. Ge and Gu finished 1999
as the world No. 1-ranked pair, and are likely to be in the finish
in Sydney. The same can be said of Ge and Liu in mixed doubles.
