Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU, aka Beiwai) held its first international education forum and established the School of International Education in Beijing on Wednesday.

The school aims to promote international education and to foster international talents nationwide. Cao Wei is named the Dean of the school.

Peng Long, Chancellor of BFSU, Liu Jinghui, Secretary-General of China Scholarship Council, Steven Miller, Cambridge English Language Assessment Regional Director, and other distinguished guests including over 100 principals of Chinese schools and education experts attended the event.

Let China know the world, let world know China

Founded in 1941, BFSU is China's first institution specializing in foreign languages education. The university has seen more than 400 graduates becoming ambassadors, and is therefore dubbed as the "diplomat's cradle". Peng Long said that internationalization is the DNA of BFSU, and BFSU has mission to let China know about the world and let world know about China. He said: “One purpose of the establishment of the School of International Education is to let high-quality teaching resources go out of the university, enter society, root in society, and serve society.”

“The foremost task for the school is to define its understanding of international education in order to guide its practice,” Cao Wen said at the launching ceremony. “Our goal is to innovatively construct a collaboration platform within and beyond the walls of the university to share the concept and practice of internalization of BFSU with the people in need and at the places in need.”

Gaokao won’t decouple the role of English-language-test

“Some parents send their children to learn English when they are only four years old,” Peng said to People’s Daily Online. “The school also focuses on English-language education to children, teenagers, and adult. It will cooperate with governments, organizations, and enterprises to provide English training to their employees.”

Peng Long also denied the rumor of removing the English test from Gaokao, or national college entrance exam. “There will be another way to test students’ English level in Gaokao, but that doe not mean to remove the English language test. High school students should reach a certain level of English, and then they will be granted to enter university. ”

“It is clear that language ability is increasingly being taken as one of the key criteria for life changing decisions such as immigration, employment and education,” Steven Miller stressed the importance of learning a foreign language. He said the School of International Education will play an important role in encouraging learning and sharing of knowledge, expertise and experience across international boundaries.
