"I made more than 2 million yuan by selling quilts last year," says a Chinese college student. Now he has established his own IT company and employs more than 12 thousands part-timer workers, Chongqing Evening News has reported.

Zhang Hongyu, fourth-grade student at Chongqing Nanfang Translators College under Sichuan International Studies University, sold nearly 5000 quilts for 2 million yuan last year. In his first grade he sold study materials and computer items, and in third grade he opened a convenient store, made deliveries, and sold bedding products and phone cards. "I buy good quality quilts from Jingsu, a city well-known for its bedding products, in various styles and colors. Also I offer refund to buyers, and last year I sold 5000 quilts," says Zhang.

Zhang has also found opportunities in the tourism business on campus, and is organising a number of travel routes for students; he believes that his tourism business, quilt selling, and the IT company will realize more than 10 million yuan in annual revenues.

Developing business opportunities is key to survival on the campus market

"College students swarming to do business is a good thing, but most of them cannot survive in the market because of the limited scope of their business," says Vice-chairman of China International E-Commerce Conference Organizing Committee Zhang Binhong.

He points out that the market is the only criterion for measuring the success or failure of a business. If a student's business goes bad, it can badly affect their studies. Most college students do business on campus, because the barriers are low, but strong imitative and low differentiated businesses among peers cause blind competition, so developing more business opportunities is key to survival in market.
