BEIJING, June 22 -- The body of Wang Wenyuan, former vice chairman of the Central Committee of the Jiu San Society, one of China's eight non-Communist parties, was cremated in Beijing on Sunday.

Wang died of an illness on June 16 at the age of 83.

In addition to his post at the society, Wang served as vice chairman of the ninth National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.

Chinese leaders Xi Jinping, Zhang Dejiang, Yu Zhengsheng, Liu Yunshan, Wang Qishan and Zhang Gaoli attended the cremation ceremony at Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery in west Beijing, said an official statement.

The statement described Wang as "a renowned social activist, an outstanding leader of the Jiu San Society and a close friend of the Communist Party of China (CPC)."

A distinguished scholar in the accounting circle, Wang penned and translated more than 20 books and cultivated a large number of talents in the realms of accounting and economics during his 30-year-plus teaching career at the Liaoning University.

Wang joined the Jiu San Society in 1982. In his leadership role, Wang united many experts and scholars to carefully search various social issues such as sustainable development, developing China's western regions and using talents to boost national power. Useful proposals were offered to the CPC Central Committee as a result.

Wang also worked as the president of China Council for the Promotion of Peaceful National Reunification and was known for his efforts in promoting economic and financial exchanges as well as emotional ties between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan.
