SEOUL, July 7 -- South Korea Monday urged the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to stop claims that its nuclear weapons program will guarantee peace and prosperity of the Korean Peninsula.

"DPRK should not repeat its unreasonable claims, but return to the dialogue table," South Korea's Unification Ministry spokesman Kim Eui-do told a press briefing.

The DPRK's nuke-for-peace claim was unconvincing, Kim said, noting that the program will act as an obstacle to improving inter- Korean relations.

Earlier on Monday, the DPRK government made a four-point proposal clarifying its principles on easing tensions on the peninsula and achieving "independent reunification" of the two Koreas, a day before the 20th anniversary of the death of its former supreme leader Kim Il Sung, grandfather of incumbent leader Kim Jong Un. Pyongyang called for ending reckless hostility and confrontation, asking Seoul to stop all kinds of DPRK-targeted military exercises it plans to conduct with "outsiders."

The DPRK also called on South Korea to seek "reasonable reunification proposal," referring to the June 15 joint declaration that was issued at a historic 2000 summit between late South Korean President Kim Dae-jung and late DPRK leader Kim Jong Il.

The spokesman said South Korea has repeatedly expressed a stance on supporting all agreements made between the two Koreas, including the June 15 declaration, noting that there has been no change in its position that all issues between the two Koreas should be resolved through dialogue.

Regarding the DPRK's decision to send its cheering squad to the upcoming Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea, Kim said Seoul will make preparations for participation of the DPRK's athletes and the cheering squad according to international practices.

The DPRK said it will send a sports delegation along with a cheer-leading squad to participate in the 17th Asian Games to be held in the South Korea western port city of Incheon from Sept. 19 to Oct. 4.

It will be the first dispatch of the DPRK's cheering contingent since 2005 when the DPRK sent its cheer leaders to the Asian Athletics Championships held in Incheon. Pyongyang sent its cheering squads to South Korea for the 2002 Busan Asian Games and 2003 Daegoo Summer Universiad.

The DPRK proposed halting inter-Korean hostilities on June 30, but the proposal was rejected by South Korea a day later.
