BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil, July 8 -- Miroslav Klose netted his 16th World Cup goal to break Ronaldo's tournament scoring record on Tuesday.

The 36-year-old knocked in Germany's second goal in their semifinal against Brazil after Julio Cesar blocked his first attempt at the Mineirao stadium.

It was Klose's second strike of the tournament after he was also on target in Germany's 2-2 draw against Ghana in the group stage.

The Lazio striker is one of only three players to score at four World Cup finals - along with Brazil legend Pele and Germany's Uwe Seeler.

He is also Germany's all-time record scorer with 71 goals in 136 international matches.

Ronaldo had held the World Cup scoring record for eight years, having netted 15 times in football's premier tournament from 1998 to 2006.

Tuesday's match was Klose's second start in Brazil, with Joachim Low mostly preferring to use the forward as a late substitute.
