A mountain top was shaved off to build an airport in Hechi, south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

Situated on top of a cliff 667 meters above sea level, Hechi Airport will be the highest civilian airport in Guangxi when it opens next month.

The construction, approved in May 2006 with an investment of 850 million yuan, began in December 2008 and was completed at the end of 2013.

More than 60 hilltops were leveled off to make way for the airport's construction.

According to Guangxi Airport Management Group, it will focus on opening more flight routes to develop aviation economy in Guangxi.

The airport will have one runway that is 2,200 meters long and 45 meters wide, which can handle 3 flights an hour, compared to 60 flights for some of China's busiest airports. The terminal building covers 4,200 square meters.
