There are different customs across Shaanxi Province. Due to the influence of many local factors there, including climate, economy, and culture, people in Shaanxi have acquired some unique features in their basic necessities of life, which are collectively called the "10 strange wonders of Shaanxi."

Pulled noodles are as wide as belts.

Pulled noodles are also referred to as biang-biang (the Chinese character for the word biang is not found in a modern Chinese dictionary) noodles. A pulled noodle may be as wide as two-thirds of a decimeter or 1 decimeter and as long as about 1 meter. The noodle may be as thick as a coin, or as thin as a cicada's wing. A noodle is enough for a meal. People living in the Central Shaanxi Plain would like to knead dough and then roll it into a thick sheet and cut it into wide stripes. Such noodles are smooth, soft, and chewy. The noodles are delicious and make people not prone to hunger.
