The Global HIV Prevention Coalition held its inaugural meeting in Geneva, Switzerland from October 10-11, 2017, with China’s StarTimes as the only private media in attendance. StarTimes Vice President, Guo Ziqi, stressed the need for the global community to attain the prevention targets of the 2016 Political Declaration on Ending AIDS.

“We want to make full use of our resources and experience to implement the roadmap so that the message reaches the largest number of people at the shortest possible time in order to make the most impact. This means that StarTimes will be in the vanguard of HIV prevention,” Guo Ziqi underscored. “Our 10 million subscribers can be reached with the urgent message and hope of ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030 in collaboration with UNAIDS,” she added.

The meeting was co-convened by United Nations AIDS, UNAIDS Executive Director, Michel Sidibé and the United Nations Fund for Population Activities, UNFPA Executive Director, Natalia Kanem. The Inaugural Meeting of Global HIV Prevention Coalition assembled United Nations member States, civil society groups, philanthropists, academics and international organizations, to launch the Prevention 2020 Roadmap for achieving global commitments on HIV prevention.

United Nations member States have committed to reduce new adult HIV infections to fewer than 500,000 annually by 2020 and to end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) have since been working on generating support for a global HIV prevention coalition with the aim of strengthening and sustaining political commitment for primary prevention.

According to Guo Ziqi, though Internet is developing fast, television remains the primary source of information for the overwhelming majority of Africans. As a digital TV operator, StarTimes has a lot to offer for HIV prevention, she noted. Furthermore, StarTimes is implementing the “Access to Satellite TV for 10,000 African Villages” under the guidance of Chinese and African governments.

StarTimes and UNAIDS on May 12, 2017 in the Chinese capital, Beijing, signed a Memorandum of Understanding on HIV prevention. StarTimes is a leading digital TV operator across Sub-Saharan Africa with over 10 million subscribers.
