Craftsman Li Zhiguo says he will not let wood carving die in his generation; instead, he will create more wood products and pass on the skill to later generations, the official WeChat account of the administrative committee of Xiongan New Area reported on Jan. 22.

The man in his 60s is an inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage of Rongcheng County under the administration of the Xiongan New Area, a new economic zone southwest of Beijing.

He started to carve things on wood in 2002. Now, many of his works are nearly perfect, including simple patterns, flowers, and birds for home decoration.

The family business was passed on to Li from his grandfather, who was born in 1895 and died in 1961. Now, the skill is being studied by Li’s daughter and nephew.

Li’s works are well accepted by customers. Besides spreading the traditional skill, Li and people like him are benefiting from the Xiongan New Area, which aims to become an ecological and livable city.

“The city has brought new opportunities to the traditional craft. Though I’m over 60, I’ll work hard to pass on my skill to more people, create more wood products, and make contributions to Xiongan,” Li said with confidence.
