By Morag Hobbs (People's Daily Online)    14:52, August 01, 2018

Guizhou is situated in the southwest of China, and is known for its fresh air and bounteous mountains parted only by sleepy valleys. Not only that, but the area’s tourism is still in its early stages, meaning there’s no better time to get an authentic look at what living in China is like and appreciate the unchanged traditions and culture the province has to offer.

Liupanshui, the second largest city in the province, is located in the Wumeng Mountains of western Guizhou. It is famous in China for its cool, comfortable summers. With an average temperature of 19 degree Celsius, Liupanshui is the perfect place to escape the scorching summer heat.

As Liupanshui is warming up to be a tourist hotspot in coming years, we created this list of five things you have to do when you next head to Guizhou!

Visit a minority village

Changjiaomiao minority village

Guizhou is home to many minorities that are each incredibly proud of their own unique culture and customs. You can visit a number of villages in the province to learn about the Miao and Dong minorities, among others.

The villages have been redesigned and the government has implemented poverty alleviation methods to give locals jobs, so many people now work in the tourism industry. You can visit village museums to learn about how they were created and buy handmade souvenirs unique to the area. Villagers here are welcoming, friendly and will happily let you into their world so you can get a taste of life in present-day rural China.

Of course, you’ll also get a chance to try some delicious local food. In the Changjiaomiao village, visitors can watch how the Changjiaomiao make local rice cakes and even have a go. There are many culinary delights to try on Food Street including dumplings, rice cakes and spicy noodle dishes.
