For more than 10 years, the Chinese government has invested more than 10 billion yuan ($1.4 billion) in Sanjiangyuan National Park – the headwater area of the Yangtze, Yellow, and Lancang (Mekong) rivers – for ecological protection and restoration, reviving the grassland and woodland in the area.

Nowadays, more projects are being carried out in China under the nation’s strengthened regulations and efforts on ecological restoration.

Since 2012, the central government has launched a series of important ecological restoration projects, such as natural forest protection, returning farmland to forests, and desertification control.

For example, Jingtai County, Gansu Province, NW China, has planted more than 40,000 mu (about 27 million km) of forest in desert area, completed 300,000 mu (close to 200 million km) of desertification, and cultivated grass and forest over 135,000 mu (90 million km). The vegetation coverage has increased from less than 20% to 75%, large saline-alkali areas have been effectively treated, and the ecological environment has been restored.

The report of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China also specifically stressed on major restoration and key ecological system protection projects.

As one of the latest projects, on Feb. 15, a special action for the investigation and remediation of sewage intrusion into the Yangtze River was officially unveiled. With a total length of more than 6,300 km, the Yangtze nourishes a total of 11 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities in China.
