Changsha promotes waste classification

(People's Daily Online)    14:28, July 09, 2019

It was learned from the Changsha Municipal Bureau of Urban Management and Law Enforcement on June 30 that Changsha has been making rapid progress in waste classification.

This year, Changsha will initiate waste classification in the city’s 633 communities. It will also speed up the improvement of the waste-sorting system for waste dumping, collection, transportation, and treatment. In addition, it is stepping up related legislation.

In 2017, Changsha was listed as one of China’s 46 key cities and will pilot a national waste classification program. These cities are required to set up a system to classify and dispose of their household waste by 2020.

How to sort household waste in Changsha? “In Changsha, the household waste is categorized as dry, wet, recyclable, or hazardous waste. At present, when we promote waste sorting in residential neighborhoods, we first require residents to classify their household waste into wet or dry waste, so as to gradually develop their habit of waste classification,” said Zhong Ting, director of Sanitation Department of the Changsha Municipal Bureau of Urban Management and Law Enforcement.

Last year, Changsha carried out waste sorting in 342 communities. The amount of household waste reaching the municipal garbage treatment terminals was reduced by 13.59% compared with 2017. The city will promote waste sorting in all of its residential neighborhoods by 2019. Meanwhile, a green account for household waste classification and a big data platform for district-, county- and city-level household waste classification will be gradually established.
