FREETOWN, April 5 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese medical team in Sierra Leone has trained around 100 local medical workers in a bid to support the country's COVID-19 fight, the team said here on Sunday.

Sierra Leone recorded its first COVID-19 case on Tuesday.

"As one of the most underdeveloped countries in the world, Sierra Leone still faces a shortage of medical resources," said Jiang Haibo, chief of the Chinese medical team in Sierra Leone, adding that the Chinese doctors have the responsibility to fight against the pandemic together with local medical workers.

"The training has equipped many local medical workers with general knowledge of COVID-19, and they are now making a better preparation for the pandemic," said Jiang.

According to Jiang, the China-Sierra Leone Friendship Hospital has been designated as a special hospital to receive COVID-19 patients.

"All the Chinese doctors here are ready to do our best in this fight against the pandemic," Jiang added.
