U.S. reports over 26,000 monkeypox cases
LOS ANGELES, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- Over 26,000 monkeypox cases had been confirmed in the United States as of Monday, according to the latest data of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
California has the most confirmed cases among U.S. states so far, with 5,010 cases, followed by New York with 3,948 and Florida with 2,543, according to CDC data.
The monkeypox virus is unlikely to be eliminated from the United States in the near future, according to a report published by the CDC last week.
The CDC said the outbreak is slowing as the availability of vaccines has increased and people have become more aware of how to avoid infection.
Monkeypox infections are rarely fatal, with most cases resolving within two to four weeks. According to the World Health Organization, the disease has a fatality rate of around 3 to 6 percent.
However, immunocompromised individuals are more likely to experience severe illness when infected, according to the CDC.
