SHIJIAZHUANG, July 18 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese court on Tuesday sentenced Sun Guoxiang, a former senior legislator of northeast China's Liaoning Province, to life in prison for bribery.

Sun, former deputy director of the Standing Committee of the Liaoning Provincial People's Congress, was convicted of taking bribes worth over 97.65 million yuan (about 13.66 million U.S. dollars) by the Intermediate People's Court of Langfang City in north China's Hebei Province.

He was found guilty of taking advantage of his former positions in Panjin City of Liaoning between 2008 and 2018 to help relevant companies obtain loans and special funds, the court ruling stated.

Sun is deprived of political rights for life, and had all of his personal property confiscated and illegal gains from bribery recovered and turned over to the state treasury, the court said.
