<full-text><![CDATA[Attempts by Cambodia to list the controversial Preah Vihear temple, which stands across the area of both Cambodia and Thailand, as a World Heritage site during the current United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) annual session held in Canada's Quebec City, are expected to bear fruit, according to Thailand's World Heritage Committee.

Pongpol Adireksarn, chairman of the committee and currently attending the UNESCO session, said that more than half of the 21 World Heritage Committee members had told him informally that they favored the Cambodian government's registration of the ancient temple as a World Heritage site as it had "untiringly pursued the issue on a constant basis", the official Thai News Agency reported on Sunday.

He quoted committee members as telling him that the concerned Phnom Penh government had also invited them to visit the temple, unlike Thailand whose "policy was uncertain" and whose government changed frequently, the report said.

The temple issue is expected to be conferred by the World Heritage Committee on Sunday night, Thailand time.

The International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), a non-governmental organization, had distributed reports to the committee, saying that the listing of the temple alone as a World Heritage site would pose no problem for the consideration, said Pongpol.

But the ICOMOS recommended that both Cambodia and Thailand should jointly propose that the surrounding area to the temple should also be included as the World Heritage site.

Thai Foreign Minister Noppadon Pattama, attending the session as an observer, is expected to oppose and delay the listing of the temple following the Thai Administrative Court's temporary injunction against the June 17 cabinet approval of the joint communique he signed with Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Sok An.

Noppadon said in Quebec that he would prepare a letter and lobby the Committee to delay the listing of the temple.

<full-text><![CDATA[A salmonella epidemic continues to spread across the United States, raising the number of infected cases to more than 900, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said on Saturday.

Among the 943 reported cases nationwide, at least 130 people have been hospitalized since mid-April when the first salmonella cases appeared, according to the FDA.

Tainted tomatoes remain the leading suspect in the salmonella outbreak, although investigators are testing other types of fresh produce, the FDA said.

Investigators have begun looking at jalapeno peppers as a possible cause of the outbreak as well as other ingredients used to make salsa such as cilantro and serrano peppers, FDA spokeswoman Stephanie Kwisnek said.

Among all the possibilities, investigators have been exploring whether tomatoes and other produce are sharing a common packing or shipping site where both might become contaminated or whether multiple foods might be tainted while being grown on adjoining farms or with common water sources.

Last week, the government said it would test numerous other kinds of fresh produce commonly served with fresh tomatoes while insisting that tomatoes remained the possible leading culprit.

Investigators from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have interviewed people taken ill in June in an effort to find out what they ate and compare their diets with those of healthy relatives and neighbors.

Officials have not revealed their early findings so far, only saying that they supported the investigation's new move.

CDC spokesman Glen Nowak said Saturday that the agency's scientists were working around the clock to try to pinpoint the source of the outbreak but were not ready to single out anything.

Salsa ingredients including peppers were among the items being tested, Nowak said. "We don't rank the items we're looking at."

Some patients have reportedly complained that they ate raw tomatoes in fresh salsa and guacamole.

Consumers and farmers have criticized health officials for the slow pace of the probe, which the FDA says is unavoidable because of the wide scope of the outbreak, the shaky memories of victims and the difficulties of tracing tomatoes.

<full-text><![CDATA[Officials of a Filipino government research institute said Saturday 4 million Filipino children are malnourished and the number is expected to grow as inflation forces households to cut down on food, the Philippine Daily Inquirer said on its website.

The officials of the Food and Nutrition Research Institute were quoted by the newspaper report as saying that most of malnourished children live in the southern Mindanao region, the central region of southern Tagalog and Eastern Visayas, where up to one-third of children under the age of 10 are either underweight or short for their age.

In the capital region of Metro Manila, four out of every 100 children are also underweight due to mal-nutrition, said the report.

Moreover, the increasing food prices would only worsen the malnutrition in the country, as the households begin cutting down their food budgets, said the report.

Many households are reducing purchase and consumption of fruits and meat, while vegetables and fish remain on the table because they are relatively cheaper, according to the report.

Filipino children are not eating enough vegetable and their diet consists mostly of foods high in salt and sugar and low in nutrition or low protein, energy, and vitamin intake, said the report.

Meanwhile, about 1.6 million Filipino kids are over-nourished, said the research institute, which is charged by the Department of Science and Technology to provides relevant technologies and scientific information on food and nutrition.

The inflation rate in June hit a 14-year-old high of 11.4 percent in the Philippines, mainly due to high oil and food prices and a weakening peso, the local currency, in exchange rate against the U.S. dollar.

<full-text><![CDATA[Beijing's tourism authorities have said they are going to target visitors from other Asian countries as guests of the city's homestay scheme for the Olympics.

The city has already selected 571 families and hopes to have about 600 households as officially designated "Olympic Family Hotels" for Olympics tourists next month.

At a press conference on Saturday, Beijing Tourism Bureau vice director Xiong Yumei said visitors from Asian countries, including Japan, the Republic of Korea, Singapore and Malaysia, would be introduced by travel agencies to the families.

Bookings had not started since the family hotels were just selected, officials said, but a 200-member tourist group from Malaysia was looking for home stay accommodation.

Xiong did not give a reason for choosing Asia as the major target, but travel agency insiders said the short marketing time and available transportation made it is easier to organize Asian tourist groups than westerners.

Most of the families lived near major stadiums, trunk roads, cultural sites and hutongs, or alleyways, making it easy for overseas guests to enjoy life in the capital, according to the bureau.

The cost of each "Olympic Family Hotel" is 50 to 80 U.S. dollars per night, about a seventh of the cost of a three or four-star hotel for the Games.

The selection of homestay families from 1,118 candidates started in April. Hosts should be able to provide spare rooms, good ventilation and sanitary conditions in buildings that have good emergency facilities and lighting. Each family should have at least one person able to speak English, Xiong said.

Beijing is gearing up to accommodate at least 330,000 visitors every day during the Olympics. About 500,000 foreigners are expected to visit the capital at some point during the Games.

A report last month from the tourism bureau showed Beijing hotels still had a high vacancy rate for the Aug.8-24 Games. Five-star hotels were 77 percent booked for the Olympic period. About 45.5 percent of four-star rooms were reserved while three-star hotel had a 20-percent reservation rate.

The hotels can provide 66,000 beds, more than the 43,000 needed every day during the Games, tourism officials said.
