The Death toll in the hooch tragedy in south India has increased to 46 by Saturday morning with 10 others falling prey to the killer brew, according to the Press Trust of India (PTI).

Over 100 people developed giddiness and nausea, and even collapsed on the spot on Thursday night after consuming illicit liquor at two villages in Guddalore, a district near the state capital of Chennai, about 2,090 kilometers south of here.

With over 120 people still under treatment in a government-run hospital, 29 had already lost their vision, the agency quoted a source in the hospital as saying.

Three local officials had been suspended of their duty in connection with tragedy, the third in the last two month in the state, PTI said.

In similar hooch tragedies, over 30 people died at Kottur village, not far away from Chennai, in the first week of last month, and three people died of the illicit brew in another village of the state three days ago.
