Police and paramilitary forces fired shots at the gates to Parliament on Thursday after a loud explosion and reports that some men tried to enter a gate used by lawmakers.

Hundreds of rounds were fired as police hid behind cars and corners. The standoff was broadcast on most television stations.

Parliament was adjourned but most Cabinet members and lawmakers were still inside when the shooting started.

Police appealed for everyone to take cover as the shooting continued for more than 20 minutes.

Two people were injured and taken to hospital.

Police said they had no information, and most details came from reporters at the scene.
