At least five suspected Kasmiri militants and six policemen have been killed in an attack on the Indian Parliament Thursday, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pramod Mahajan said.

Mr Mahajan, speaking to reporters from inside the barricaded Parliament, says the officers killed were from the Delhi Police Department.

"Members of Parliament are being escorted out of the complex, the situation is returning to normal," he said.

Emergency doctors at New Delhi's Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital say at least 25 people, mostly police personnel, were brought in wounded from Parliament.

A stream of ambulances was seen racing out of the British-built Parliament complex.
