China's third cloned calf was born on January 31 in Caoxian County, east China's Shandong Province, where the first and second cloned calves were born 12 days earlier.
Scientists at Shandong Zhongda Animal Embryo Engineering Centersay nine other milk cows are also pregnant as a result of cloning technology. Three or four will give birth within a few days.
Unlike the first two calves "Weiwei" and "Keke", which were delivered by Cesarean section, the new female calf was delivered normally.
"Zhongzhong" is black and white, now weighs 51 kilograms and will become a dairy cow. She drank two kilograms of milk within 30minutes of her birth.
The large-scale cloning operation is a key project funded by China's National Natural Science Foundation. It is jointly undertaken by the Institute of Zoology under the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Shandong Zhongda Animal Embryo Engineering Center.
Of the first two cloned calves, "Weiwei" died an hour after birth. "Keke" is doing well.
