Cosmetics from mad-cow diseases areas banned

As noted in a bulletin released jointly by the Ministry of Health and the State General Administration for Quality Supervision and Inspection and Quarantine on March 4, the cosmetics containing the raw materials or extracts from brains, nerve cells, inner organs, placentas and blood of cows and sheep which came from countries suffering from "mad-cow" disease would be banned to import and sell.

The bulletin indicated from the said day the above-mentioned cosmetics must, not later than April 20, 2002, be taken back from markets by enterprises concerned. Meanwhile, their names, quantities and manufacturing enterprises or agents are required to be submitted to provincial health administration departments and departments directly under the State Administration for the Inspection of Import and Export Commodities.

Sources said with the deadline approaching, Beijing Entry-exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau will launch a thorough check on imported cosmetics in Beijing market together with departments concerned.
