China is to spend more money treating soil erosion through science and technology, realizing the target of "reconstructing beautiful environment" by middle of the century, Vice-Premier Wen Jiabao said Monday.

He told the 12th International Soil Conservation Organization Conference which opened Monday that the Chinese government pays high attention to water and soil conservation. The country has made efforts on comprehensive management and general planning of hills, water, farmlands, forests and roads.

China still faces severe water and soil erosion problems caused by its special geographical, social and economic conditions, noted Wen, adding that environment problems have hindered China's social and economic development.

Wen Jiabao said that clean freshwater and arable soil are the most important strategic resources in the 21st century. China stands by its sustainable development strategy and will make greater efforts in water and soil conservation and ecological construction.

The country will continue to strengthen water and soil conservation along the middle and upper reaches of the Yellow River and Yangtze River, and areas around Beijing and Tianjin municipalities, he said.

The vice-premier stressed that improving the ecological environment and realizing sustainable development are the common duty of both government and people. The Chinese government will actively observe international treaties on environmental protection.

The International Soil Conservation Organization Conference is held every two years. Wen Jiabao acts as honorary chairman of the 12th conference which has attracted over 800 experts and scholars from over 70 countries and international organizations.
