Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and Pakistani President Gen. Pervez Musharraf plan to attend an international security conference in Kazakstan early next week and meet separately with Russian President Vladimir Putin, a senior Russian official said Tuesday.

The talks in Kazakstan are part of international efforts to defuse mounting military tensions between India and Pakistan, the two nuclear-armed rivals who have threatened to go to war over Kashmir.

Alexander Losyukov, the Russian vice foreign minister in charge of Asia affairs, said the ambassadors of India and Pakistan in Moscow confirmed the Kazakstan meetings in talks earlier Tuesday.

Kazakstan will host a meeting of regional leaders on June 3-5.

Losyukov said Putin will meet the Indian and Pakistani leaders separately and ruled out a joint session of the three leaders.

Vajpayee and Musharraf are not expected to meet directly during their stay in Kazakstan, Losyukov said.
