Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi Wednesday phoned Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and urged him to exercise restraint in disputes with Pakistan over the Kashmir region.

The Japanese preme miniter asked the Indian leader "to exercise self-restraint and leadership in dealing with the tensions about which the international community is concerned," Kyodo News quoted a Japanese Foreign Ministry official as reporting.

Vajpayee told Koizumi that India does not want war and has to closely watch how Pakistan deals with a number of serious conflicts that have occurred since October last year, the report said.

The 20-minute telephone conversation came after a similar one Tuesday between Koizumi and Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf.
