Suspected Armed Poachers Arrested in W. China

Patrolmen with the Hoh Xil National Nature Reserve in northwest China's Qinghai Province have captured four suspected armed poachers who were hunting endangered Tibetan antelope.

Patrolmen with the Hoh Xil National Nature Reserve in northwest China's Qinghai Province have captured four suspected armed poachers who were hunting endangered Tibetan antelope.

The suspects were driving in two cars, carrying two guns with nearly 20,000 rounds of ammunition, as well as knives and telescopes, when they were arrested on June 2, sources with the reserve said.

The four suspects left Huatugou Township in Qinghai on May 30 and had allegedly planned to hunt Tibetan antelope, prized for their pelts, in the border area between Qinghai, Xinjiang and Tibet.

Covering an area of 83,000 square kilometers, the Hoh Xil reserve is one of the best preserved and biggest nature reserves in China. It is home to dozens of endangered animals, including the snow leopard, yak, wild donkey and brown bear.
