Chinese President Jiang Zemin arrived in the Estonian capital Wednesday morning to begin his state visit to the Baltic country, the first ever paid by a Chinese head of state.
Upon arrival at the airport, Jiang said in a written statement that he would have a series of meetings with Estonian President Arnold Ruutel and other officials to exchange views on the development of bilateral relations and international issues of common concern.
"The exchange of views is aimed at enhancing mutual understanding, deepening friendship, expanding common ground and promoting cooperation," Jiang said. "I am convinced that with the concerted efforts of both sides, China-Estonia friendly relations and cooperation will continue to move forward."
Jiang noted that in recent years Estonia has enjoyed political stability, social harmony and rapid economic growth. Its people's living standard keeps improving and its international standing is on the rise.
"We are satisfied to see that over the past 10 years since the establishment of diplomatic ties, our bilateral relations have been growing steadily. Exchanges and cooperation in political, economic and trade, cultural, education and other fields have madepositive headway, yielding rich fruits," Jiang said.
The Chinese president flew in here from Riga, Latvia, with his entourage including his wife, Wang Yeping, and Vice Premier Qian Qichen.
Estonia, a former Soviet republic, has an area of 45,200 squarekilometers and a population of 1.361 million. It established diplomatic ties with China on September 11, 1991.
