Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has said that Iraq "is the greatest danger Israel is facing," calling for a close strategic coordination between Israel and the United States, the Ha'aretz Daily reported Tuesday.

The prime minister made the remark Monday before the Knesset (parliament) Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee.

Asked if Israel plans to attack Iraq if Baghdad attacks Israel, Sharon said that "we don't know for certain if the United States will attack Iraq. Iraq is a great danger. It could be said it is the greatest danger. We aren't intervening in US decisions."

But the "strategic coordination between Israel and the United States has reached unprecedented dimensions," the report quoted Sharon as saying.

Israel has notified the United States that it would respond to any Iraqi attack, even if there are no casualties, emphasizing that it would not practice the same kind of restraint demonstrated in the Gulf War in 1991.
