Developed by British-based Exel, the logistics centre for Nokia (International) Industrial Park officially began operations Thursday.

Involving US$10 million worth of investments and covering nearly 1,000 square metres, the logistics centre will provide "seamless chain services" to realize the minimum of inventory procedures at Xingwang Park in Beijing, said John Allan, chief executive officer with Exel plc.

"Exel's comprehensive range of innovative logistics solutions (for Xingwang) encompass the complete supply chain from design and consulting through freight forwarding, warehousing and distribution service to integrated information management and e-commerce support," said Allan.

Thanks to the efforts made by the Beijing Customs, an automated customs declaration procedures has also been launched in the logistics system, which will greatly enhance efficiency.

Nokia (Xingwang) Industrial Park is home to Beijing Nokia Mobile Telecommunication Co Ltd and its components, sales and various services providers.

Exel, as the handler of two-thirds of the world's top 250 non-financial multinationals, boasts rich experience of logistics operations for comprehensive industrial parks.

"The Xingwang Industrial Park adopts some innovative concepts used in our Seat/Volkswagen supplier park operating in Spain," said Allan.

Lauri Vesalainen, vice-president with Operations, Logistics & Sourcing of Nokia Asia-Pacific, said the establishment of the logistics system will further reduce the storage and transport costs of Nokia and its partners, which may attract more co-operators.

Located in the Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area (BDA), Nokia (Xingwang) Industrial Park started construction in 2000 and is the largest single foreign-funded project in Beijing to date, with the money pooled reaching 10 billion yuan (US$1.2 billion).

"The prosperity of the park will be a great contribution to the development of BDA," said Chen Wenshen, vice-director with the Administrative Committee of BDA.
