China welcomed Iraq's unconditional acceptance of the United Nations (UN) Security Council Resolution 1441 on weapons inspections, Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan said in Beijing on Thursday at a regular pressconference.

In response to a question on the Iraq issue, Kong said China had taken note of Iraq's letter to the UN secretary-general, expressing its unconditional acceptance of the Security Council Resolution 1441 which gives Iraq a week to accept the Resolution.

This was a right and positive decision, and China welcomed it, Kong said.

China sincerely hoped the relevant resolutions adopted by the UN Security Council would be fully and strictly implemented, Kong said, and inspectors from the UN Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) could return to Iraq to carry out their work efficiently as soon as possible so the Iraq issue could be settledby political means within the UN framework at the earliest possible date.
